When I started taking pictures of every object in my home studio, I was hoping to reflect on the individual objects; the ones that were taken for granted and the ones that have been sitting inside its box for years. Though I did get a little of that, there are more aspects to these things than I had realized. I have been using this room as my studio for almost a year, but many of the stuff here have been with me for many more. It was during the process of documentation that I started to see these objects as the building blocks to my practice. Many artists collect, whether it is physical items like materials, tools and sketchbooks, or just immaterial thoughts and ideas in the mind, these collections are the components that help us build our artistic practice. Using the boxes of objects in my collection as a metaphor, these collected components can be stacked higher and higher, or get replaced and rearranged as we reconsider our choices and methods. The boxes that we decide to keep, deconstruct or discard will change, along with the growth of our artistic practice. In this work, these blocks encompass a mix of personal and professional belongings. They are the things that I could not let go of, the stuff that gives me inspiration, and the objects that can be utilized to make works. |
In a way, a book of studio objects can describe an artist’s practice, much like an autobiography in an abstract form. The reading of the things printed on the book can show what an artist might have done and tried (process) and might be making(trajectory).
