Potted Pots

Sculpture

Digital print on paper and other mixed media

2024 - ongoing

Potted Pots is a series of work that revisits abandoned flowerpots after futile attempts at high-rise gardening.

"These uncanny paper plants, composed of digitally stitched photographs of the very pots they occupy, mimic real plant species yet remain resolutely artificial: forever alive, yet never quite living. At once familiar and strange, they return life to what has been forsaken, embodying an urban longing for nature that forever eludes the artist. In this playful act, failure blossoms into flourish, irony into quiet renewal." (Michael Lee, "Tender Returns", catalogue essay draft for Towards Happiness, Prosperity and Progress, 2025)

Potted Tower is part of the ongoing Potted Pots series. In this installation, the flowerpots resemble modular units that are stacked or suspended, much like building blocks. Stacked vertically, the pots resemble a collection of homes or a miniature high-rise; hung together, they form another configuration of modular dwellings. The leaves growing from each unit suggest the desire to bring nature into these compact spaces. With the humble flowerpot taking on the ambitions of architecture, the installation turns a failed garden into an absurd and playful landscape of homes, plants and high-rise development.

This installation looks at corners and transitional spaces where plants are usually placed. These plants are meant to decorate and fills gaps. It aims to bring nature and warmth to a room, even if it's artificial.

We stay in a hotel room for a night, may be two or three. A home for the nomadic, like the plant that moved from the soil to live in a pot.

The Potted Pots series started with this project. Replicating the idea of a plant market, this installation exist in a 2 day booth at a Photography-focused market, where good exist mostly in the form prints and books. This booth stood out as the only sculpture based booth, expressing its displacement and humour.
